About- The Utrecht Institute for Pharmaceutical Sciences (UIPS) is the Research Institute of the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences of Utrecht University. UIPS focuses on processes around discovery, development, and use of drugs and medical nutrition using molecular and technological principles from the Natural and Life Sciences. This research is ideally positioned in the Faculty of Science to work on basic scientific problems and to translate new findings into potential solutions to urgent societal medical needs, which are addressed in the Faculties of Medicine and Veterinary Medicine. Every year around 400 peer-reviewed articles are published and around 30 PhD candidates defend their thesis. UIPS is partner in several open source innovation networks.

Eligibility/Qualification-

  • holds a PhD degree in (Bio)Medical, (Bio)Statistical or Pharmaceutical Science or other relevant research field;
  • has a strong research track record in methodological development/evaluation in observational drug research;
  • has scientific creativity and productivity, as evident in recent publications in (international) peer-reviewed journals;
  • has the potential -and preferably experience with- to acquire research funding;
  • has experience in supervising MSc students;
  • is fluent in English;
  • is effective and efficient, able to work within international/multidisciplinary teams and think conceptually;
  • has good communication skills.

Job/Position Description- As a Postdoc of pharmacoepidemiologic methods you will be employed in the Division of Pharmacoepidemiology and Clinical Pharmacology, Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences of the Faculty of Science, Utrecht University.

The Division of Pharmacoepidemiology & Clinical Pharmacology consists of a multidisciplinary team of young and internationally oriented researchers. The research programme is directed at several epidemiological, therapeutic, and policy aspects of chronic drug use with a focus on advanced affordable biomolecular and cellular therapies.

The Centre for Research Methods is embedded in the Division. Its mission is to develop, improve and evaluate innovative pharmacoepidemiologic methods. Main focus of the Centre is on methods to control for confounding in causal drug research, health technology assessment, precision medicine and increasing the validity and richness of data on drug exposure, disease outcomes, confounding (e.g. comorbidity, risk factors) and modifying (e.g. biomarkers) factors.

The main focus of the current position will be on development and evaluation of pharmacoepidemiologic methods to control for (un)measured confounding and multidatabase analysis with the overall aim to obtain reliable information on benefits and harms of medicines after marketing.

Function-

  • The position involves 80% research time and 20% teaching activities. The core tasks will include:
  • contributing to the acquisition of external research funding for the benefit of the research programme;
  • development and evaluation of pharmacoepidemiologic methods;
  • contribution from the candidate to (maintaining) cooperation with (inter)national partners in the field of pharmacoepidemiology;
  • coordinating and teaching pharmacoepidemiology related courses in the programmes of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Drug Innovation and the Pharmacoepidemiology Summer Programme;
  • carrying out and (co-)supervising research (PhD and MSc) within the scope of the research programme.
