Severo Ochoa Postdoctoral Programme 2018 in Spain

Designation/Position- Severo Ochoa Postdoctoral Programme

Applications for Severo Ochoa Postdoctoral Programme is invited by Institute for Neuroscience, Alicante, Spain from eligible and interested candidates.

About- The Mathematics Applications Consortium for Science and Industry (MACSI) is Ireland’s largest applied and industrial mathematics group and works closely with scientists and industrial companies across a wide variety of sectors. MACSI’s aim is to foster new collaborative research, in particular on problems that arise in industry through the application of cutting-edge mathematical and modelling techniques.

The emerging discipline of Computational Social Science (CSS) studies human behaviour, as manifested in the digital trails we leave in our interactions with each other. The development of mathematical models for CSS is urgently required to underpin the analysis of large-scale data and to move beyond the identification of correlations to create new scientific understanding of collective behaviour in both online and offline social networks.

In this Science Foundation Ireland funded project, we are seeking to recruit two postdoctoral researchers to develop new mathematical techniques and models to help revolutionise the understanding of the dynamics of social spreading phenomena, such as viral information contagion and cascades of popularity. We will focus on the mathematics of age-dependent (non-Markovian) branching processes to generate analytical and asymptotic results for inference and calibration with large-scale CSS data. Understanding and controlling the temporal aspects of information diffusion and cascade dynamics on social networks will improve the predictability of technology adoption and opinion propagation and enable us to accurately identify the most influential nodes within diverse dynamical systems on complex networks. As part of the project, we will seek to develop and apply algorithms to social spreading phenomena that are of interest to industry partners.

The candidate should have a strong publication record in either or both of the following areas:

  • Mathematics of networks.
  • Analysis and model calibration using large-scale Computational Social Science data.

Research/Job Area-Fellowship is offered in various research areas.

Location– Institute for Neuroscience, Alicante, Spain

Eligibility/Qualification- This call is opened to experienced researchers of any nationality with a doctoral degree.

PhD should have been completed before the application deadline (15 November 2018).

Mobility (i.e. not having carried out her/his main activity in Spain for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately before the call deadline) will be appreciated and positively evaluated.

Job/Position Description- Appointed postdoctoral researchers will receive an employment contract with a gross annual salary of € 29,000-35,000, depending on experience, and will pursue their research in a highly collaborative environment without teaching duties. Opportunities to undertake postgraduate teaching and/or transfer activities would be also available. We have an active policy for mentoring young researchers, which typically involves the association of young scientists with experienced researchers in the same programme. We will offer postdoctoral researchers the possibility to attend laboratory management courses to provide them with laboratory leadership and management skills.

Employment contracts will be prepared in accordance to Spanish laws and regulations, and employees will be included in the general Spanish Social Security System. With this, appointed researchers and their families will receive full health insurance coverage.

The present call offers up to 6 Postdoctoral fellowships each with a duration of 2 years.

The Institute for Neuroscience is launching a Postdoctoral Programme linked to the 2018-22 “Severo Ochoa” Award for Spanish Centres of Excellence, and offers up to six Postdoctoral positions.

Research group is seeking exceptional and highly motivated young investigators interested in working in any of the priority research lines of our Strategic Plan (see below).

A Selection Committee will assess the applications received and may request on-line interviews with the candidates. Candidates will receive notification of the evaluation process by mid December 2018. Incorporation to the IN is expected within the first semester of 2019.

How to Apply- Before submitting the application, potential candidates should contact and get the support of a Principal Investigator of one of the research teams in the IN (see full list here). This commitment is required for submitting the application.

Applications should include the following documents (in PDF format):

  • Written support of the Principal Investigator of the IN host lab.
  • Short CV. Use of the model CV is mandatory
  • Motivation letter (max. 1 page, min. font size 11 pt.).
  • Brief description of the 2-yr project, which must fit at least one of the topics defined in the Strategic Plan (max. 2 pages, min. font size 11 pt.).
  • Two letters of support.

They have to be submitted exclusively by email to so-neurociencias@umh.es.
