Postdoctoral Fellows Position – 2018 in CeMM, Austria

Designation/Position- Postdoctoral Fellows

Ce–M–M– Research Center for Molecular Medicine, Austria invites application for postdoctoral fellow position from candidates having PhD in a relevant field.

About- The Bergthaler laboratory at the CeMM Research Center for Molecular Medicine of the Austrian Academy of Sciences in Vienna, Austria is looking for two Postdoctoral Fellows who strive to study fundamental molecular questions in the areas of viral infections, inflammation and immunity. Data-driven and hypothesis-driven approaches are integrated to address pertinent pathophysiological questions on the organ/organism level (Ref: e.g. Schliehe C et al. Nature Immunology 2015 (PMID: 25419628), Bhattacharya A et al. Immunity 2015 (PMID: 26588782), Khamina K et al. PLoS Pathogens 2017 (PMID:  292618079)).

CeMM is an international research institute of the Austrian Academy of Sciences and founding member of EU-LIFE ( CeMM is a leading biomedical research institutes in Europe and provides a collaborative, dynamic and personal environment. The official language at CeMM is English with more than 40 nationalities present at the institute. CeMM aims to promote equality of opportunity for all with the right mix of talent, competences, and potential and thus we welcome applications from candidates with diverse backgrounds.

Research/Job Area- Biology, Computational Biology, Technology Development

Project Title- Molecular Immunology and Infection Biology

Location- Ce–M–M– Research Center for Molecular Medicine, Austria

  • PhD in a relevant field (e.g. Molecular Biology, Immunology, Virology, Genomics, Epigenetics, Tissue
  • Biology, Computational Biology, Technology Development).
  • Alternatively, you have a MD/DVM degree and strong interests in mechanistic molecular research.
  • Strong publication track record with at least one first-author paper in a reputated peer-reviewed journal.
  • Expertise in molecular biology, immunology and animal models.
  • Additional skillsets (e.g. histology, screening assays, data analysis, modeling) are welcomed assets.
  • Critical, creative and proactive mindset.
  • Team player with strong interdisciplinary communication skills.

Job/Position Description- An exciting and collaborative work environment at the forefront of biomedical research.

An attractive employee benefits package including a fair salary that is in line with the recommendations of the Austrian Science Fund (FWF), health insurance, company health care, competitive holiday allowance and daily bonus for the in-house cafeteria.

Project 1: Metabolite-driven inflammation in viral hepatitis.

Metabolic-inflammatory hubs that modulate antiviral CD8 T cells and liver pathology will be studied on the tissue level. Coupled to latest technologies (CRISPR screens, single cell sequencing, metabolomics, flux measurements), we expect new insights into the crosstalk between metabolism and inflammation in vivo. This may open avenues to tailor immunological responses and ameliorate tissue pathology.

Project 2: Impact of chromatin-associated proteins in inflammation.

The role of chromatin-related proteins in cytokine-mediated immunoregulation will be investigated in models of infectious and sterile inflammation. Newly generated gene-targeted mouse models and immunological and virological assays will be integrated with systems-level approaches (ChIP-seq, RNA-seq) to identify novel mechanisms of immunoregulation in infection and autoimmunity.

Both projects will benefit from established in vivo disease models, unpublished data and reagents, strong bioinformatics support, access to world class core facilities (next-generation sequencing, metabolomics, proteomics, drug screens) and a vibrant collaborative network with international leading scientists.

How to Apply- Please upload your application documents to our online system and include a cover letter, CV, academic transcripts, and contact details of three referees. Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis. Start dates are flexible.

The PI:

Dr. Andreas Bergthaler received training in premier laboratories at the University/ETH Zurich, University of Tokyo and at the Institute for Systems Biology in Seattle. His team currently consists of 10 members representing 6 nationalities, who closely collaborate across projects. The lab is funded by intramural funds from the Austrian Academy of Sciences and competitive grants (European Research Council (ERC), Austrian Science Fund (FWF)).
