Postdoctoral Research Associate Position in University of York, UK

VISTA Postdoctoral Fellowship in York University, Canada

Designation/Position- Postdoctoral Research Associate

University of York – Heslington Campus, UK invites application for Postdoctoral Research Associate position from eligible and interested candidates

About- The University of York’s Wolfson Atmospheric Chemistry Laboratories (WACL) wish to recruit a Postdoctoral Research Associate to develop a new generation of field-deployable laser-based instruments to constrain the role of chlorine on the composition of the troposphere.

The Wolfson Atmospheric Chemistry Laboratories are the largest dedicated atmospheric chemistry facility in the UK. Home to more than 65 researchers with interests in all aspects of atmospheric chemistry WACL supports an exceptional research environment, providing access to state of the art facilities and a wide range of interdisciplinary expertise.

The Department of Chemistry is one of the largest and most successful academic departments at York, placed in the top ten UK for Research Power by the 2014 Research Excellence Framework exercise (REF). As a Department we strive to provide a working environment which allows all staff and students to contribute fully, to flourish, and to excel. We are proud of our Athena SWAN Gold Award.

Research/Job Area- Atmospheric Science, Physics, Chemistry, or related field or equivalent experience

Location- University of York – Heslington Campus, UK

Eligibility/Qualification–

  • Undergraduate degree in any STEM discipline and have a PhD in Atmospheric Science, Physics, Chemistry, or related field or equivalent experience
  • Well-developed analytical skills and attention to detail and commitment to high quality measurements.
  • Knowledge in spectroscopic detection methodologies and a range of advanced measurement techniques  to engage in high quality atmospheric chemistry research
  • Highly developed communication skills and the ability to write up research work for publication and make presentations at internationally recognised conferences
  • Ability conduct individual and collaborative research projects and to work as part of a team and also to work independently using own initiative

Job/Position Description- This role is primarily focused on the development of novel absorption spectroscopy based observational techniques for the detection of atmospheric chlorine atom source compounds, and the subsequent deployment of these new instruments in targeted field studies. As part of a recently funded ERC project you will be working with Dr Pete Edwards, and others at WACL, to reduce significant uncertainties in the role of chlorine as an atmospheric oxidant.

You will also be responsible for the development of instrument calibration methodologies, working closely with collaborators at the National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration laboratories in Boulder, Colorado, and the University of Manchester.  Once developed and characterized the instrument will be deployed as part of wider observational efforts to a range of different chemical environments (e.g. London, Cape Verde Islands) to explore chlorine chemistry in different locations.

The successful applicant will lead on the development and characterization of the new instrument; generate and analyse the research data; and lead the production of research outputs (papers and presentations). Where appropriate you would be expected to provide help in supporting the work of other researchers on the wider project.

The post is full time and fixed-term for a period of up to 4 years and will be available from 1st February 2019 or as soon as possible thereafter.
